I still haven’t wrapped my head around how BMW engineers managed to fit a RWD drivetrain, a full size spare, and an 18 gallon fuel tank in the back half of this car while still having a trunk big enough for at least two bodies.

Also a battery!

Yes also that

I’m going to assume it’s also why the engine compartment cannot fit an accessory belt and a human hand in it.

The E39 never fails to give me more reasons for my thinking it’s the perfect Sedan.

fuel tank under rear seat, so basically the rear passengers are riding a bomb

Atleast two bodies you say?
I’ll have to test that out...

You can too, just gotta remove the fan and shroud first.

Seriously I don’t know how they did it with the gas tank. It’s only 1.7 gallons short of my mom’s Sienna. It must be a TARDIS tank.

There’s an illustration in the trunk showing four golf bags being stowed so y ou could possibly even fit three bodies.

Actually, with a trunk volume of 460l and an average adult volume of 95l, you could fit 4.8 of them in there as long as you chop them up.

Easy. Fuel tank sits under the back seat so it’s out of the way. Diff, suspension, etc, is all below the body, except the com pact strut towers which are wide for best handling and getting things between them. Spare tire well sits so the top ends up level with tye floor above the suspension. The space behind the rear axle is mostly superfluous.

Welp....time to buy a vaccum sealer!

I wish at least some car reviews would show how big the trunk is in terms of dead bodies.

We should start that

I’ve noticed that bmw has a weird habit of cramming most of the engine bay and then leaving giant open spaces. On the e39 540i and also e60 535i, both have a shitload of available space on the right side of the engine. I get that intake/exhaust packaging mandates that to a certain degree, but all the abs, cooling, etc. shit is packed on the left...

I know on my e30 6cyl the open space in the front is the battery tray for the 4cyl cars. They do this to maintain the 50-50 weight distribution.

I’m down!

There’s a lot of open space to the passenger side of my engine (you could fit a waterm elon in there and still close the hood) but that's occupied by the airbox on the V8 models.

Stop rationalizing away my amazement.

oooooooooh ok that makes sense. thanks!

yeah based off longtime lurker’s comment plus this, seems like the engine options are pretty big reconfigurations. Cause on my v8 I have zero room passenger side...
